Epaphrodite Binamungu
Based in the capital Kigali, Epa (as he is commonly known) Binamungu is one of Rwanda's leading artists. He was born in 1954 in Mugombwa in the prefecture of Butare, Rwanda.
Epa makes mixed media paintings using sand with exceptional results, and for which he is very well known, as well as beads and other materials. Epa is also a sculptor and has received significant commissions including one from the Belgian government, Rwanda's colonial rulers, who commissioned him to create a work of art in memory of the genocide that occurred 10 years ago. Epa has built a 9 metre statue in the Butare Memorial Centre.
Since returning to Rwanda from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) at the end of the genocide, Epa has drawn greatly from the tough experiences he went through without making the art troubling at all.
Epa went to art school in Bukavu in the DRC and he has exhibited widely in the DRC, Rwanda, France, USA, at the National Museum in Kampala, Uganda, the Expo 2000 in Hanover, Germany and he represented his country at the Europ’ART exhibition in Geneva, Switzerland in 2002. He runs a gallery that he co-owns with another artist, the Enganzo Art Gallery in Kigali.
Equation Café is very pleased to be hosting Epa for his second showing in Uganda.
